I had a visit with my dental hygienist the other day. It took her about half an hour to complete the cleaning and periodontal charting (you know where they poke your gums to measure pocket depth, bleeding, and recession). This was a lot shorter than the past visits I had, which were a grueling experience. I try not to remember the invasive procedure of dental cleaning, so as not to dread my next visit until I sit in that chair.

But this visit was a lot more calm and less painful. This is because I paid attention and committed to a more thorough habit of flossing and added oil-pulling using coconut oil to my daily routine. What a world of difference it made! Not only was the procedure more pleasant, but my gums also appear to be a lot healthier!

The Lord reminded me that this daily habit similarly applies to my spiritual health. If I want a healthy relationship with my Lord, I have to commit to coming to Him daily so He can do a regular checkup of my heart, to make sure there is no root of bitterness and unforgiveness lingering in the dark. The tartar on my teeth is a buildup of food debris, acid, and bacteria in my mouth that hardens over time when they are not reached by my toothbrush or floss. Just like the places in my heart that harden when they are not checked and reached by the Word of God, reflection, and confession.

The Lord is so patient with me to chase me down every day until I submit to Him and surrender to Him all that is in my heart. He knows that I tend to drift away and I get distracted with so many things in this world that hinder me from spending time with Him.

Today, May you be aware of the Lord's soft still voice. He wants to draw you closer to Him. He wants a deeper relationship with you. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what you need to confess and repent of, and to lead you to spiritual discipline that will help you to stay close to our Lord.

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14 NIV
