As a shepherd himself, David knew about the constant care his flock required in order for them to survive. He knew his flock and their needs. Not only that, we can only assume that he also personally knew those who needed special attention.
Likewise, his sheep knew him and his voice. He called out to them and they followed him. If you haven’t seen a Youtube video of a shepherd calling out to his flock and how they respond to his voice click here.
It is truly fascinating to watch!
As David’s flock followed him wherever he went, he probably had this picture in his mind of God’s goodness and love following him wherever he went. How comforting that image must have been to David!
God’s goodness and love were David’s constant companion. They never left his side and he was never alone, especially during moments when he had to tend to his flock and rescue them from wild animals all on his own.
Were there times in your life when you felt alone? Write down the circumstance and describe how you felt.
Write down your thoughts on Psalm 23:6a. How have you experienced God’s goodness and love in the past and/or recently?
What does it mean for God’s goodness and love to follow us daily?
Prayer:
Lord, thank you that I don’t have to live in fear or loneliness. You never leave my side. You are always near. Your love and goodness are constantly with me every day. When I pray, you answer. When I need assurance, You are there. What more can I ask for? I am so thankful for your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
