As the saying goes, “there are things that money can’t buy.” You can buy the most comfortable mattress, but not a good night's sleep. We can go shopping to our heart’s content, but only God can give us satisfaction. Our physical bodies have needs, and so do our spirit and soul. Only God can give us rest and peace that our body and soul long for. There is truth in what this quote attributed to Blaise Pascal states:
"There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man, which cannot be satisfied by any created thing, but only by God the Creator".
Resting and being quiet in His presence are gifts from the Lord. He uses our quiet moments to refresh our body and soul. That is when our minds are open to hear His voice - when we are not occupied with so many to-do lists or bombarded with noise from our devices. In our busy lives, making time for resting in the quiet presence of the Lord is not easy. It takes intentionality and discipline.
Instead of resting in the Lord's presence, too often we do things that we think will satisfy the longing of our hearts. They may not necessarily be bad things, but if done to replace God, and simply to fill the void in our heart that only God can fill, they can control our lives and destroy our peace.
Here are a few examples:
Binge eating
Shopping
Binge watching
Social Media
Working long hours
Doing these things to replace God is like having chocolate or cake for a meal. It tastes good, but it can never satisfy nor nourish our body. Indulging in them regularly will starve us of the nutrients our body truly needs.
It may be time to do a little heart searching to see where we may change our habits so we can get some rest, instead of filling our hearts with things of this world.
What is the Lord is telling you as you let Him search your heart?
May the Lord bless you and may your find your rest and satisfaction in the Lord's presence today.
