The rod and the staff in Psalm 23 symbolize God’s protection and discipline.

The rod - a long, sturdy stick is used to drive off and fight predators who attack the sheep. The staff is also a long stick but with a curved top to snag a straying sheep back to where it belongs - with the shepherd.

There is comfort and safety in staying close to our Shepherd who is ready and able to protect and fight for us. He protects us from our enemies and from ourselves when we make bad choices.

He disciplines those He loves. Discipline is not punishment, it is correction, maybe even a rebuke to get us back on track. Those who look to the Lord as a Shepherd must receive correction with humility because the Lord loves us and His discipline does not intend to harm us.

“…because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Hebrews 12:6

Recall an instance in your life when you experienced God’s protection.

Thank you, Lord, for always protecting me and keeping me safe. Thank you for always guiding me and correcting me when I go astray. I feel secure. It is such a comfort knowing your eyes are constantly on me. Amen.
