Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19

This past weekend, I took my time meditating on Psalm 68:19. This short verse carried me through the lonely days of motherhood when my kids were young. Those also were the years I dealt with depression.

Collins Dictionary defines burden as a “heavy load that is difficult to carry”.

Burdens in this context could be problems or unresolved issues causing emotional pain, fear or worry that we carry around as a heavy weight.

Surrender every burden to the Lord.

God carries our burdens every day, and He wants us to remember that we can trust Him and do not need to worry or be afraid. Does this mean we can simply abandon our problems and not resolve them, or ignore unresolved conflicts and issues and neglect our responsibilities?

Jesus did not say we should just ignore our problems or issues. He said not to worry. He said, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

After praying about a situation, believe that He has answered your prayers and He will lead you to the answer and resolution.

In James 1:5-8, it says,

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

Here are more bible verses on surrendering our burdens to the Lord.

Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken. Psalm 55:22

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

And do not be concerned about what you will eat or drink. Do not worry about it. For the Gentiles of the world strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added unto you. Luke 12:29-31

Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

You could be the Lord’s answer to your prayer.

Have you read the story of Nehemiah? In chapter 1 of the book of Nehemiah, he describes how he was struck with grief when he heard that the city of Jerusalem was in ruins. The Lord answered his prayer in chapter 2, when he was given permission by King Artaxerxes to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Mind you, this was a very dangerous attempt by Nehemiah. The king was not necessarily a nice person and could have had Nehemiah executed if he had chosen to do so.

If you want to know if God wants you to do something about what you’re worrying about, ask Him, and He will let you know. You could be the one the Lord has been calling to be the solution to your problem!

Trust in the Lord’s ways and timing.

Sometimes, all we need to do is pray, trust Him, and let Him work things out in His own way and timing—especially if it is something over which we have no control. I know this is easier said than done. I am a doer, and I enjoy taking matters into my own hands—often, to my own detriment. I like solving problems, working on projects, and seeing everything come to fruition. It gives me a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. However, I have learned the hard way and made a few mistakes by getting ahead of the Lord’s will and trusting in my own intuition. I can tell you, doing it this way does not help at all.

Trusting in the Lord means believing He has already answered our prayers, and relinquishing any control over how and when it is done.

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

He is in control, He knows what He is doing, and it is for our good.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Let us pray:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please hear my petition. Here are the burdens that I have been carrying in my heart, and I surrender them all to you: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thank you for carrying my burdens daily. If there is anything you want me to do other than pray about my petition, please show me, and I will obey you. I lay them down at your feet. Help me to trust you. I will not worry or stress about them anymore.

Thank you, Lord, for your unfailing love, for walking with me daily, and for the Holy Spirit who constantly reminds me of your Word and your promises.

In Jesus’ powerful name,

Amen
