In Psalm 143, David’s prayer for protection from his enemies, King David knew how it was to be surrounded by enemies. He was a warrior and a military leader after all. His training started at a young age as a shepherd boy fighting bears and lions to protect his flock. As a shepherd, it was his duty to make sure the sheep grazed safely in a green pasture, while keeping an eye on predators lurking in the dark.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies… is a picture of God’s provision and protection. God lets us enjoy His presence and provision and we don’t have to worry about our enemies as long as we are under His care and authority. The enemies can surround us but they cannot harm us as we keep our gaze on Jesus.
You prepare a table before me… In order to enjoy the Lord’s feast, the provision set before us, we need to trust in God’s protection. We can’t protect ourselves, we can only guard ourselves from being tempted, only God can give us real protection. If we let go of the control and let God protect us and provide for us, and if we entrust ourselves under His care, we can rest and be assured that the enemy cannot advance against us and we don’t have to fear.
…in the presence of my enemies. God protects us from all our enemies, be it the world system that corrupts the soul or the unseen enemy, the devil. We need a mighty spiritual iron dome the size of God to protect us from all of these, don’t you think? And only God can offer that kind of protection.
Can you name a few enemies that are plaguing you and destroying your peace?
Can you come to God and let Him protect you and handle all your enemies?
Prayer:
Lord, here are the issues brought against me by my enemies (name them one by one), I surrendered them all to you and let you take care of them for me. If there are any steps I need to take to be freed from the shackles and torment of the enemy, please give me instructions, help me to trust in you and lead me to my freedom. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen!
