God's Promise of Peace

God’s peace is not distant or out of reach—it is His loving promise to everyone who chooses to trust Him. No matter what season you are walking through, His presence can quiet your heart, renew your hope, and remind you that you are never alone. Recently, my family and I were on the road back to Michigan from our short trip to Indiana, when, while in the backseat of the car, the Lord spoke to me and reminded me about someone telling me that I have a “calm and quiet spirit.”

I had forgotten about that. It must have been around ten years ago. Years of stress, anxiety, and depression had weakened my peace, and I had forgotten what it felt like to rest in God’s gift of a calm and quiet spirit. Instead of peace, my life had been filled with constant chaos, feelings of failure, and feelings of not doing enough.

As I sat back there, I prayed that God would bring me back the calm and peace that He promised. He gave me the desire to take back what the enemy stole from me.

God promised His peace to those who trust in Him. I want my peace back. It is God’s peace and presence that bring me calm. I want that calm and quiet spirit back. I feel it most when I am free from the need to perform, please anyone, or alter my personality to accommodate people’s wishes just to feel accepted.

When I have peace, that is when I am at my best. That is when I hear God’s voice clearly. That is when I can experience more of God’s presence, connect with people on a deeper level, and show them grace and compassion without fear of being judged or criticized.

God’s promise of peace comes to those who trust in Him and are good stewards of peace. This means we must safeguard the peace the Lord has given us, or we may lose sight of it.

But first, what are the signs that we have peace according to Scripture?

1. Our minds are set on Jesus, and we trust that whatever it is we are going through, we can depend on Him. He is the Rock that cannot be moved. He will never change His mind about helping us in time of need.

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock”. Isaiah 26:3–4

2. We are not troubled, distressed, or afraid amid uncertainties, struggles, or unforeseen events because we know that God is sovereign over all things.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”. John 14:27

Also, in Colossians 1, Paul declares the supremacy of Christ over everything in heaven and on earth,

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1: 15-17

3. We are anxiety-free in a way we can’t understand, despite the gravity of our situation. After praying about our requests, God’s peace protects our hearts and minds, and we experience hearts full of peace and surrendered to His will.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation... present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. Philippians 4:6–7

We know that even though we don’t understand why things are happening to us, God has our best interest at heart. He will never leave us or forsake us.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

4. We have hope. Jesus is the God of hope, and it is only when we trust in Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, that we can find hope, joy, and peace even in the middle of difficulties and impossibilities.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”. Romans 15:13

Paul wrote to the Thessalonians, encouraging them to find hope in the resurrection as they grieved those who had died. We are not like those who do not believe in God; they do not have hope, but we do.

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 1 Thessalonians 4:13

While sitting in the backseat of the car and meditating on God’s faithfulness, I felt His peace wash over me. What a blessing! I want to live a life filled with peace. If this resonates with you, let us journey together to understand more about God’s gift and promise of peace.
