Life can get loud, and if we’re not careful, our peace can be drained by responsibilities, relationships, worries, and the noise around us. But the peace God gives is too valuable to leave unprotected. Before we can guard it well, we first need to understand what God’s peace really is.

“Peace” in the Bible does not merely mean the absence of conflict and chaos. God’s peace is not based on our circumstances. It is something God gifts us with as we draw closer to Him and trust in His power to calm our hearts and minds.

The transcendent peace of God, “Shalom,” means “wholeness, completeness, wellness, and soundness.” Source: Got Questions

The purpose of this article is to claim God’s Shalom, that we may feel whole and well in our soul even as we battle chaos in the outside world.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:23

Once we understand that God’s peace is deeper than our circumstances, it becomes easier to recognize the things that try to pull us away from it.

Here are some things that can destroy our peace:

• Feeling and carrying other people’s negative emotions and burdens

• Surrounding ourselves with toxic individuals

• Our own negative thoughts and emotions—worry, fear, stress, sadness, bitterness, anger, etc.

• Lack of rest and sleep, fatigue

• Social overstimulation

• Watching too much news and social media

• Working long hours

• Family emergencies

After reading through that list, it may help to pause and ask ourselves a few honest questions:

• Which of these steal your peace?

• Which of these are outside your control, and which may be self-inflicted?

• What can you do to protect your peace?

• What is God teaching you about protecting your peace?

These questions are not meant to bring guilt or pressure. They are simply an invitation to be honest with ourselves and allow God to show us where our peace may need protection.

We are all works in progress, and I must admit that I am sometimes tempted to do some of these things to my detriment. Still, by God’s grace, I can learn to choose peace, grow in wisdom, and overcome as Jesus did.

That kind of discipline begins with the heart, because what we allow into our hearts will eventually shape our thoughts, choices, and peace.

Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23 (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

Guarding our hearts involves being vigilant about what enters our minds through our senses—what we hear, see, and feel.

- What are we watching, listening to, and reading, and who are we surrounding ourselves with that may destroy our peace?

- How can we arrange our schedules to make room for rest, Bible reading and meditation, prayer, and other healthy boundaries?

- What guardrails should we put in place to protect our hearts?

Sometimes, protecting our peace requires more than quiet time or better boundaries. You may need to talk to a trusted friend, a pastor, or a counselor if there are things and relationships in your life that you need to cut off to find peace. May the Lord lead you to the next steps.

Holy Spirit, please reveal to us the condition of our hearts and the things we keep there that are not yours—the emotions, thoughts, and beliefs that destroy our peace. Please guide us and give us wisdom as we discipline ourselves and guard our hearts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

As we continue learning how to protect our peace, Scripture gives us encouragement, wisdom, and reminders of God’s presence. Let me leave you with some Bible verses that can guide you in guarding your heart and staying anchored in Him:

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. Jeremiah 33:3

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him,

and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way. Psalm 37:7

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. Psalm 62:5

But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. Psalm 131:2

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

After sitting with these verses, one truth becomes clear: God does not leave us to protect our peace on our own. He gives us His Word, His presence, and His strength for every season.

May you continue to seek the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind, trusting that His peace is not only a promise to receive but also a gift to protect. As you delight in Him, may He quiet every anxious thought, strengthen you in every difficult season, and lead you into a deeper awareness of His presence. The world may bring trouble, pressure, and uncertainty, but Jesus has already overcome the world—and in Him, we can walk forward victoriously with courage, hope, and peace.

Shalom!
